Greenway’s selection marks first full partnership by an EHR provider in PCORI-funded research network development
CARROLLTON, Georgia, Feb. 21, 2014 — Greenway® and the prestigious Vanderbilt University Medical Center will jointly develop a clinical data research network (CDRN) that will include nearly 30 million patients and speed the translation of research findings into clinical practice. By participating in the project, Greenway is the first electronic health record (EHR) provider to be a full partner in a national Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) grant.
The Mid-South CDRN created by Greenway and Vanderbilt will fuel research with the de-identified electronic health records of patients nationwide along with patient-reported outcomes. Approximately 24 million patients will be those with electronic records in Greenway systems, and the remainder will be patients of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Vanderbilt Affiliated Healthcare Network.
A New Infrastructure to Support Improved Population Health
The Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute program was authorized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) to fund research aimed at improving the health of entire populations, and the new Mid-South CDRN project will create an infrastructure to support clinical data research for years to come.
“CDRNs will provide an unprecedented means for leveraging EHRs, information technology and robust research infrastructure to drive clinical research,” said Russell Rothman, MD, MPP, principal investigator of the Mid-South CDRN and director of the Vanderbilt Center for Health Services Research. “The Mid-South CDRN will help advance U.S. healthcare outcomes by delivering quick and efficient insights into patient needs across a vast population.”Russell Rothman, MD, MPP Vanderbilt Center for Health Services Research
Greenway was selected for the Mid-South CDRN project in part because of the ability of PrimeSUITE®, Greenway’s integrated EHR and practice management solution, to interoperate with a wide variety of other systems, extract and aggregate de-identified patient data from EHRs, and track patients over time and across settings to build a longitudinal record.
‘Unlocking The Data In EHRs’
“Greenway’s inclusion in this project is a testament to our efforts to unlock the data in EHRs and extend it across the national healthcare system to improve outcomes and contribute to population health,” said Greenway CEO Tee Green. “We applaud PCORI’s efforts to advance research coordination nationally and look forward to contributing to the success of this very important initiative.”
The Mid-South CDRN will eventually join additional PCORI-funded ventures to form a National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network called PCORnet.
