The Data Portability Export Summary is generated using the Data Portability Export Utility.

The Office of the National Coordinator specifies in the 2014 Edition EHR Certification Criteria the requirement for a certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) to generate export summaries of patient records. The purpose of this criteria is to provide data liquidity for providers so that patient data may be migrated at a low cost and in a structured format from one EHR technology to another. Without this standard providers could be restricted to their current EHR technology which could ultimately impede innovation.  In the event a provider wishes to change to another EHR technology this data portability CCDA structure will simplify the movement of patient data.
