Providers of 90 percent of U.S. EHRs agree to implement three commitments to improve flow of health information

CARROLLTON, Georgia, Feb. 29, 2016 — U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell has announced that companies that provide 90 percent of electronic health records — including Greenway Health™ — have pledged to implement three core commitments that will improve the flow of health information to consumers and healthcare providers. Burwell made the announcement Feb. 29 at the beginning of the Health Information Management and Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference & Exposition, attended by more than 40,000 health IT professionals, clinicians, executives and vendors from around the world.

CEOs from the major health information technology providers plus executives from more than a dozen leading professional associations and stakeholder groups met with Secretary Burwell prior to the public announcement, to discuss the commitments in their ONC Interoperability Commitment Pledge, as well as how the private-sector companies can work effectively with HHS to make interconnected systems and true patient-centered care a reality as soon as possible.

The three commitments are:

Consumer Access: To help consumers easily and securely access their electronic health information, direct it to any desired location, learn how their information can be shared and used, and be assured that this information will be effectively and safely used to benefit their health and that of their community.

No Information Blocking: To help providers share individuals’ health information for care with other providers and their patients whenever permitted by law, and not block electronic health information (defined as knowingly and unreasonably interfering with information sharing).

Standards: Implement federally recognized, national interoperability standards, policies, guidance and practices for electronic health information, and adopt best practices including those related to privacy and security.

Greenway Health has long been known as a leader in advancing interoperability, secure data sharing, and the adoption of industry-wide standards. Greenway has invested in and played an active role in all major industry-driven interoperability initiatives including CommonWell Health Alliance, the eHealth Exchange, Carequality and the Surescripts National Record Locator because the company believes in an impartial and open approach to sharing clinical data.

“At Greenway Health, we’re determined to tear down barriers to the safe and efficient sharing of pertinent data across healthcare stakeholders to make coordinated and effective care a reality,”
Tee Green, CEO Greenway Health

stated CEO Green. “It’s only through the health IT industry’s collaboration that we will be successful in enabling the secure data flow that leads to connected care and, ultimately, better health outcomes. We are proud to stand with HHS, Secretary Burwell, CommonWell and other committed organizations in the health IT community who are participating in this pledge to advance interoperability efforts.”
