Made effective June 1, 2010, the rule “Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances” gives providers the option to transmit prescriptions electronically. It also allows pharmacies to receive, dispense, and store electronic prescriptions.
PDMPs are electronic databases that operate at the state level, collecting data on prescriptions for controlled substances.
Data from the PDMP sheds light on a patient’s prescription history, helping providers determine whom they should prescribe an opioid painkiller, or whether early signs of abuse merit intervention. Licensing and regulatory boards, meanwhile, may review PDMP data to identify unusual prescribing activity on the part of providers.
